# Adding a Buoy

{% hint style="info" %}
**How long will this take me?** Please allow 2-5 minutes per buoy.
{% endhint %}

## Before you begin

* Ensure you have not exceeded the buoy limit for your organization.
* If you don't yet know the buoy's final deployment location, you can still create the buoy now and update its location later. However, the Buoy Dashboard will only show information once the buoy is deployed and coordinates are supplied.

## Adding a Buoy

1. Navigate to your organization's Settings -> Buoy Settings
2. Select "Add Buoy" and follow the prompts to add a new buoy
   1. Choose **Mooring Buoy** if this is an anchor/mooring buoy. Choose **Smart Buoy** if this buoy is equipped with Nemo Pi-compatible sensors.
   2. Enter the buoy's name (see: [#naming-best-practices](#naming-best-practices "mention")) and an optional description.
   3. Choose between **Deployed** or **Not Deployed** state depending on the current location of the buoy.
   4. Enter the buoy's deployment coordinates and water depth (in meters) where the buoy is located. Coordinates must be provided in decimal degrees (latitude, longitude).
   5. Add optional mooring information about this buoy, such as maximum vessel lengths (in meters) and maximum windspeed (in km/h) at which it is safe to moor to this buoy. You can also supply a mooring disclaimer to note any mooring nuances.
   6. Select the sharing settings if you wish to share the buoy's rough location on the public mooring map.
   7. Click **Create Buoy**

### Naming Best Practices

A buoy name is a friendly identifier for this buoy. It allows members to more easily distinguish it from other buoys in your organization (i.e. on the dashboard, map, or list view).

The name should reflect the location it marks, for example, the name of the dive site or underwater attraction. Additional information can be provided in the optional description field for each buoy.
